Discover Geneva’s Art Scene at Galerie Xippas
Hi everyone! It’s Diana from Livingeneva, and today I’m sharing one of my favorite cultural spots in town: Galerie Xippas. If you’re looking for top-tier cultural events in Geneva, a vibrant Geneva art scene experience, or simply the best things to do in Geneva on a creative afternoon — this gallery is a true hidden gem.
What is Xippas?
Located in the heart of the Quartier des Bains — Geneva’s go-to contemporary art neighborhood — Xippas has been part of the city’s cultural fabric since 2011. Originally founded by Renos Xippas in Paris in the 1990s, the gallery now has locations across Europe and Latin America. Geneva’s space is intimate, modern, and always impeccably curated. It’s the kind of place where you can see world-class contemporary art without feeling overwhelmed.
My Favorite Exhibitions
Forever in Motion (March–May 2025)
This group exhibition explored motion through kinetic and optical art. I was completely captivated. Artists like Jesús Rafael Soto, Tony Oursler, and Takis transformed the gallery into a living, breathing experience. One piece felt as if the artwork itself was pulsing — I loved it!
Vera Lutter (October–November 2022)
Her large-format negative photographs invited deep reflection. They transformed urban and industrial scenes into surreal, ghostlike dreamscapes. Walking through this show was like stepping into an alternate dimension — calm, thoughtful, and incredibly moving.
Yves Zurstrassen – Sweet Dreams (May–June 2025)
Currently on view, this exhibition is a color and texture feast. Zurstrassen’s abstract compositions feel like dreamscapes, full of movement and emotion. It’s a must if you’re into expressive, introspective painting.
What Makes Xippas So Special?
Diverse Artists – From Vik Muniz to Pablo Reinoso, the gallery represents over 50 international artists. You’ll always find something unexpected and inspiring.
Curatorial Excellence – Each exhibition feels fresh and thoughtfully designed. There’s a quiet sophistication to how the artworks are presented — the kind that makes you want to linger.
Active in Art Fairs – Xippas regularly participates in major art events like Art Genève, always presenting strong and distinctive booths.
Visiting Tips
Hours: Tuesday to Friday, 2–6:30 p.m.; Saturday, 12–5 p.m.
Location: Rue des Sablons 6, just steps from MAMCO.
Events: Keep an eye out for vernissages and guided tours. I once joined a curator-led walk-through, and it added so much depth to the experience. Totally worth it!
Xippas and the Geneva Cultural Scene
Xippas is more than just a gallery — it’s an anchor of Geneva entertainment and a gateway into the city’s international art dialogue. From participating in thought-provoking exhibitions like A More Perfect Union (with American artists addressing current social themes) to collaborating with neighboring galleries in the Quartier des Bains, it’s always at the cultural forefront.
Why You Should Go
If you’re even remotely curious about art — go.
If you’re looking for something different to do on a rainy afternoon — go.
If you’re craving a moment of reflection or visual inspiration — absolutely go.
It’s places like Xippas that make me feel so lucky to live in a city that balances elegance with bold creativity. It’s one of my personal favorites when friends ask me for the best things to do in Geneva beyond the usual sightseeing.
